What Abraham did for Lot

“And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when He overthrew the cities in which Lot had dwelt.” Genesis 19:29

Lot was not the most righteous man in the world, but he wasn’t such a bad guy either. He seemed to be a just man. (If you have time, try reading the whole chapter.) When the two angels came to Sodom in the evening, Lot invited them in for the night and showed his hospitality.

When night came, men of the city came to violate Lot’s two guests. What was Lot’s response? He refused. He did all he can to protect his guests. He knew that was the right thing to do. Lot was even willing to give up his daughters in order to protect the guests that he brought in. Eventually the angels blinded the men.

The angels warn Lot to tell his family and run away from the city as soon as possible, for it was time for the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. And Lot took it seriously and escaped from the city before it was too late. Lot and his daughters were spared. (You can read about his wife from the chapter.)

How was Lot saved though? Yes, he listened to the angels. But how was that possible? The above verse tells us that it was because God remembered Abraham. Isn’t that so powerful? From this we can learn two things: First, remember that someone is always praying for you. There is always someone praying for you. So don’t be discouraged or be in despair. Second, remember to pray for someone else all the time. What Abraham did for Lot is something we can do for others by praying for them. Intercessory prayer should be included in every prayer we make. And your prayer will change someone’s life forever.

Jealous God

“you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God…” Exodus 20:5

God can get jealous. Doesn’t that sound very human? But the Bible mentions at least 14 times about a God who is a ‘jealous God.’

Couple weeks ago, we were down in Minneapolis to see a friend. We went to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. I offered to watch over Sebin so that Hyemi can go enjoy the exhibitions with her friend. Sebin and I were in a play room for babies. While having fun in the playroom, Sebin found this baby boy who was 2 months younger than her. She got excited and she crawled up to him, waved to say hi. What happened next surprised me. She gave him a hug and kissed him! I couldn’t believe my eyes. I was jealous! You know, I kiss Sebin all the time. But it takes so much effort to have her kiss me. I have to beg for it. And now here I see Sebin going up to this stranger baby and offers her “kind gesture!”

Sebin usually enjoys my company. When she is sleepy or hungry even I, the father, cannot do anything. She only looks for Hyemi! It is always Hyemi that holds Sebin to put her to sleep. But yesterday, Hyemi was working on something so I had to put Sebin to sleep. I always wanted to do it but it was always a challenge. This time, once again I struggled. Sebin fought back, looking for mom. Eventually Sebin started to fall asleep in my arms. It felt so good. And I got jealous at Hyemi for all the awesome moments she gets all the time.

God is jealous. But that is because He loves us. One of the human words to best describe God’s love was “jealousy.” It is a term to help us understand His love. It’s not the selfish, creepy type of jealousy but pure love for His children. And I am thankful for God’s jealousy. And I am glad He is our Father.

Three Times

So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?”
He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.”
He said to Him, “Feed my lambs.”
He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?”
He said to Him, “Yes Lord; You know that I love You.”
He said to him, “Tend my sheep.”
He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me?” …
And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.”
Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.”
John 21:15-17

What a comeback for Peter! A few chapters ago in the book of John in chapter 18 we read of Peter denying Jesus, not once, not twice, but three times. And then the rooster crowed. Oh how terrible Peter must have felt when he heard the rooster crow! He realized what he had done. There was no way to take back what he just said. Peter would have just wanted to hide somewhere. No, that wasn’t his true feelings. He cared for Jesus. He loved Jesus! But he denied Jesus because he was afraid.

After Jesus was crucified He was placed in a tomb. But on Sunday morning Mary Magdalene found out that the tomb of Jesus was empty. She ran to tell Peter. Peter and John ran to find out. John arrived at the tomb faster, probably because he was younger. But when John was just standing at the entrance, Peter went into the tomb. Peter had to find out. He wanted to see Jesus.

Now in chapter 21 Jesus is asking the question to Peter, “Do you love Me?” not once, not twice, but three times! Peter answers, “You know that I love You!” The last time when Peter denied, he heard a rooster. But this time Peter hears the sweet voice of Jesus, “Follow Me.” (verse 19)

God's love

“Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.” John 13:1

I was reading John 13 to Sebin last night. Oh man, I just love this baby so much. Whenever I am with my daughter, I would hug her real tight and I would try to kiss her as many times as possible. I mean like a zillion times. Whenever I do that Hyemi would give me that look with a smile, ‘haven’t you had enough for Sebin?’ No, it’s never enough. In response, when Sebin is in a real good mood (only in a really, really good mood), and I say, “ppo ppo!” (which means, ‘kiss’) she would come towards my cheek with her tiny mouth open and put all of her saliva over my cheek.

Whenever I have the chance, I would whisper to Sebin’s ears and say, “Daddy loves you. Mommy loves you, too.” Hyemi and I forget about all the mess that Sebin created during meal times, an ocean of all the toys and baby books covering up the floor, all the crying, and waking us up at night times. Those are all forgotten. All in the name of love.

“He loved them to the end.” Our love is nothing compared to God’s love for us. He loved us so much that “He gave His only begotten Son.” (John 3:16) 1 John 4:10 tells us what love is: “In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” The love of God is beyond just emotions and feelings. It is expressed through His actions. He sacrificed His Son to die on our behalf. That sacrifice was not small. It was everything. And yet God chose to make that sacrifice, in the name of love. This God loves us, each one of us, to the end.”

Thank you, God.
