From Steps to Christ, chapter 7

“When we speak of faith, there is a distinction that should be borne in mind. There is a kind of belief that is wholly distinct from faith. The existence and power of God, the truth of His word, are facts that even Satan and his hosts cannot at heart deny. The Bible says that “the devils also believe, and tremble;” but this is not faith. James 2:19. Where there is not only a belief in God’s word, but a submission of the will to Him; where the heart is yielded to Him, the affections fixed upon Him, there is faith—faith that works by love and purifies the soul. Through this faith the heart is renewed in the image of God. And the heart that in its unrenewed state is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be, now delights in its holy precepts, exclaiming with the psalmist, “O how love I Thy law! it is my meditation all the day.” Psalm 119:97. And the righteousness of the law is fulfilled in us, “who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” Romans 8:1.”   

새 영과 새 마음

“또 새 영을 너희 속에 두고 새 마음을 너희에게 주되 너희 육신에서 굳은 마음을 제거하고 부드러운 마음을 줄 것이며 또 내 영을 너희 속에 두어 너희로 내 율례를 행하게 하리니 너희가 내 규례를 지켜 행할지라” 에스겔 36:26-27.

집을 나설 때면 항상 세 가지를 챙긴다: 지갑, 전화기, 그리고 열쇠. 그래서 언제든 어디서 이동할 때가 되면 내 몸을 세번 툭툭 치는 습관이 있다. 세 번을 툭 쳐보면 나에게 무엇이 있는지 알 수 있기 때문이다.

며칠 전 새벽 사무실에 기도하러 왔다. 기도하기 전 책을 읽다가 가방에서 펜을 꺼낼 일이 생겼다. 펜을 꺼내면서 무언가를 빠트렸다는 감이 왔다. 본능적으로 집에 이 물건을 놓구나라는 생각이 들었다. 사무실까지 차를 타고 왔으니 열쇠는 있고, 전화기는 지금 책상 위에 보였기에 집에 놓고 온 물건은 바로 지갑이었다.

집에 돌아가는 길에 지갑이 없다는 사실이 매우 의식되었다. 왜냐하면 면허증이 없었기 때문이다. 아직도 이른 새벽이라 길에는 차도 거의 없었지만 그래도 나는 과속하지 않고 매우 안전하게 운전하고자 노력했다. 교통법을 준수하고자 몇 번이고 조심하였다. 면허증이 없는 상태에서 그 어떤 이유로라도 경찰한테 걸리고 싶지 않았기 때문이다. 나는 그 날 새벽 정말 완벽한 율법주의자였으나 어쨌든 죄책감은 사라지지 않았다. 단순히 면허증을 소지하지 않고 있다는 그 사실 때문에 말이다. 

로마서 3장 23절에 의하면 우리는 모두 다 죄인이라고 말한다. 그러므로 내가 아무리 하나님의 법을 완벽하게 지키려 한다고 할지라도 우리는 어쨌든 죄인이다. 우리가 구원받을 수 있는 유일한 근거와 통로는 바로 예수 그리스도를 통해서이다. 우리가 예수님을 개인의 구주로 영접할 때 하나님께서는 우리에게 새 영과 새 마음을 우리 마음에 새겨주실 것이다. 우리 마음 속에 예수님께서 거하실 때에만 평안과 안전 그리고 구원을 느낄 수 있을 것이다. 하지만 (내가 면허증 없이 운전했듯이) 예수님께서 우리 마음에 거하지 못하신다면, 내가 아무리 하나님의 법을 준수한다 할지라도 마음의 죄와 불안감은 사라지지 않을 듯 싶다.

Ezekiel 36:26-27

“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.” Ezekiel 36:26-27.

When I leave the house, I always make sure these three items are on me: wallet, phone, keys. Every time I move around, I tap myself three times to make sure that these three items are on me.

Few mornings ago, I came to church to pray and to read. While I was reading, I needed to get something from the backpack. Then I realized something else was missing. My instinct said that this item was back at home. I drove to church, so that means I had my keys on me. I can see the phone on the desk. So it was my wallet that I left at home.

I was super conscious on my way back home because I didn’t have my driver’s license on me. Since it was early morning, there were hardly any cars on the road. But I didn’t speed, I drove safely on the road, and I made sure double, triple times not to break the law. I didn’t want to get pulled over for any reason. Even though I can claim that I was faithful to the traffic law, I felt guilty. Because I didn’t have my driver’s license with me. I was just more conscious of that fact.

Romans 3:23 tells us that we are all sinners. Therefore, no matter how much I try to obey the law, we are still sinners. The only way to be saved as you know is only through Jesus Christ. When we do so, God will give us a new heart and a new spirit. We’ll feel secure and safe only when we have Jesus Christ within our hearts. If Jesus is not present in our hearts, no matter what I do, we will be insecure.

습관의 동물

“돌아오사 제자들이 자는 것을 보시고 베드로에게 말씀하시되 시몬아 자느냐 네가 한 시간도 깨어 있을 수 없더냐 시험에 들지 않게 깨어 있어 기도하라 마음에는 원이로되 육신이 약하도다 하시고” 마가복음 14:37, 38.

어제 은행을 다녀왔다. 은행을 가려면 다리를 건너야 하는데 이 다리 길이가 3 킬로미터 이상이나 되는 긴 다리다. 이 다리를 건너게 되면 두 가지 출구가 있다. 하나는 다리를 건넌 후 그냥 직진하면 마을로 들어가게 된다. 또 다른 출구는 다리를 건넌 후 오른쪽으로 고속도로로 빠지는 길이 있다.

나는 주로 이 다리를 이용할 경우에 대부분 고속도로를 타기 위해 오른쪽으로 빠진다. 하지만 은행을 가기 위해서는 고속도로로 빠지지 말고 직진해서 마을로 들어가야 한다는 것이다. 그런데 어제 다리를 건너는 동안 잡생각에 빠지고 말았다. 정신을 차리고 보니 나는 이미 습관대로 오른쪽으로 빠져서 고속도로를 타고 있는 것이 아닌가! 잡생각에 빠진 동안 몸이 자동적으로 반응한 것이다. 결국 나는 멀리 돌아서 목적지에 도착할 수 있었다.

인간은 습관의 동물인가 보다. 우리는 습관대로 따라하는 경향이 있고 혹은 더 편하고 익숙한 방법대로 하는 경향도 있다. 예수님께서 십자가에 달리시기 전에, 체포되시기 전에, 세 명의 제자들과 함께 겟세마네 동산에서 기도를 하셨다. 누가복음에 의하면 예수님께서는 제자들에게도 함께 기도해달라고 말씀하셨다. 하지만 제자들은 너무 졸린 나머지 잠이 들어버렸다. 아마 매우 피곤하였을 것이다. 그리고 어쩌면 기도하는 습관이 잘 안들여졌기 때문인지도 모르겠다. 오히려 피곤할 때는 (기도해야 할지라도) 그냥 몸이 반응하는 데로 잠드는 것이 이들의 습관인지도 모르겠다. 

우리도 영적으로 깨어있지 않다면 삶의 죗된 습관의 길로 빠지는 것은 매우 쉬울 것이다. 그렇게 된다면 최종 목적지에 도착하기 위해서 꽤 멀리 돌아야만 할지도 모르겠다. 최악의 경우 돌아오지 못할 수도 있을 것이다. 우리는 정신 차리고 깨어 있어야 하며 우리는 쉬지 말고 기도해야 한다.

Creatures of Habit

“Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not watch one hour? Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Mark 14:37, 38.

I had to go to the bank yesterday. For me to get to the bank, I have to cross the Bong Bridge. For those of you that are familiar with this bridge in Superior, when you cross over into Minnesota you have two options: You can go straight and get into town, or you can take an exit that connects you to I-35.

Now for me, when I go on this bridge I take the exit to get onto the highway in most cases. But for me to get to the bank, I need to go straight into town. This bridge is more than 2 miles long. So as I am driving over the bridge I got distracted with certain thoughts and soon I realized that I was taking the exit to I-35 when I should have been going straight! My body just reacted without thinking due to my habit. I had to detour to get to my destination. I am sure many of you had a similar experience.

Men are creatures of habit. We tend to do what we are used to doing or it’s very easy for us to follow what is more comfortable. Just before Jesus was crucified, Jesus was praying. And 3 disciples of Jesus were with him. Jesus asked them to pray with Him (according to Luke). But the disciples fell asleep. They were tired. And perhaps, what if they didn’t create the habit of praying? Or what if their habit was to just sleep when they were tired even in times of prayer? When we don’t stay awake spiritually it is very easy for us to follow the sinful habits of life and then we would have to take a long detour to get to the destination. At worst you might even never come back. We need to stay awake. We need to pray.

마태복음 25장 35, 36절

“내가 주릴 때에 너희가 먹을 것을 주었고 목마를 때에 마시게 하였고 나그네 되었을 때에 영접하였고 헐벗었을 때에 옷을 입혔고 병들었을 때에 돌보았고 옥에 갇혔을 때에 와서 보았느니라” 마태복음 25:35, 36.

오늘 오후에 마트에서 장을 보았다. 주차장에서 잠시 대기중이던 찰나 한 여자가 내 차로 다가왔다. 행색은 초라해보였고 무언가 도움을 구하는 것 같은 표정이었다. 나는 자동차 창을 내렸다. 그리곤 물었다. "어떻게 도와드릴까요?" 그녀는 말했다. "혹시 잔 돈 있나요? 차에 기름이 떨어졌는데 기름을 넣을 돈이 없네요."

난 더 이상 묻지도 판단하지도 않고 즉시 대답했다. "여기서 조금만 더 가면 주유소가 있어요. 거기서 만나면 제가 기름을 넣어드리지요." 내가 왜 그렇게 대답했는지 모르겠다. 일반적으로 이런 상황이 닥칠 경우 난 우선 사기가 아닌가 의심을 하게 되고 상황을 피하려고 했을 것이다. 하지만 왠지 모르게 이 커플을 돕고 싶었다. 나중에 기름을 넣어주면서 왜 나한테 왔는지 물었다. 이 여자의 말에 의하면 주차장에 보이는 모든 사람들에게 도움을 청했는데 다 거절했단다. 그리고 내가 보여서 나에게 온 것이었다. 

이런 경우가 나에게는 처음이 아니다. 몇 주 전 교회가 끝난 후 모르는 번호로부터 문자가 왔다. 그도 기름값을 낼 돈이 없어 돈이 필요하다고 했다. 그래서 바로 전화해서 주유소에서 만나자고 했다.  점심 먹었냐고 물었더니 안 먹었단다. 그래서 점심도 사 주었다. 내 번호는 온라인으로 주변에 있는 교회들을 찾다가 알게되었다고 한다. 온라인으로 찾았다고 말한 것을 보니 아마 나한테만 문자를 한 것은 아니었을 거다. 

내가 이 경험을 적는 이유는 자랑하려는 것이 전혀 아니다. 오히려 이 경험을 하면서 마태복음 25장에 나오는 양과 염소의 비유가 생각 났다. 이 비유에서 인자는 과연 무슨 기준으로 양을 염소로부터 구분했을까? 성경을 얼마나 잘 외우는지 확인했을까? 성경 교리를 얼마나 잘 숙지하는지를 확인했을까? 십일조와 헌금을 얼마나 잘 내었는지를 확인했을까? 아니면 안식일을 얼마나 잘 지키는지를 확인했을까?

이 비유에는 그러한 기준이 전혀 없었다. 양을 염소로부터 구분하는 기준은 매우 단순했다. 그것은 어려움에 처한 사람들을 얼마나 잘 도와주었는가였다. 물론 우리는 성경을 잘 알아야 한다. 그러나 더 중요한 것은 성경이 말하는 바를 삶 속에서 잘 실천해야 할 것이다. 우리는 예수님의 모본을 따라야 한다. 

Matthew 25:35,36

“For I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you too Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.” Matthew 25:35, 36.

In the afternoon, I was sitting outside this mart when suddenly this woman walked up to my car. She looked like she was seeking help. I rolled my window down and asked, “How can I help you?” She said, “Do you have any change? We ran out of gas and we need gas money.”

I didn’t ask more, I didn’t judge. I simply said, “If you go down half a mile there is a gas station. Come, meet me there and I’ll fill up gas for you.” I don’t know why I said that. I can be usually skeptic when it comes to things like this, doubting and questioning the person’s story. But for some reason, I was compelled to help this couple. Later I asked why she came to me. She said she asked for help from all the people she can find in the parking lot but everyone else had declined.

This wasn’t the first time. A few weeks ago, after church, a stranger texted me and told me he needed gas money. I called up and told him to meet me at a gas station. He had found my number by searching for churches online. I have a feeling I wasn’t the only pastor he had contacted.

I am not writing these stories to brag about what I did. It simply reminded me of Matthew 25 where the Son of Man separates the sheep from the goats. What was the measurement of separating? Was it based on the how many verses you can memorize? Was it based on how many Bible doctrines you can teach? Was it based on how faithful you were in offerings? Was it based on how faithful you kept the Sabbath?

No. Surprisingly, it was defined by how much we helped other people. We need to know the Bible, but we need to practice what the Bible teaches us. We need to follow the examples of Jesus.

민수기 9:15,22

"성막을 세운 날에 구름이 성막 곧 증거의 성막을 덮었고 저녁이 되면 성막 위에 불 모양 같은 것이 나타나서 아침까지 이르렀으되... 이틀이든지 한 달이든지 일 년이든지 구름이 성막 위에 머물러 있을 동안에는 이스라엘 자손이 진영에 머물고 행진하지 아니하다가 떠오르면 행진하였으니" 민수기 9:15,22

참으로 기이한 일이다. 이스라엘 백성들이 약속의 땅을 향해 사막을 통해 여행하고 있었다. 여행을 하고 있는 동안에는 구름이 이들을 인도하였고 해가 진 후 밤에는 불의 모양이 이들을 인도하고 보호하였다. 이 구름이 진행하다가 성막 위에 멈추면 백성들은 여정을 풀고 진을 쳤다. 하지만 구름이 성막에서 걷히면 이들은 다시 여행을 진행하였다.

여기서 우리는 여러 가지 영적 교훈을 얻을 수 있지만 이번에는 두 가지만 생각해보고자 한다. 우선, 하나님께서 백성들을 인도하신다는 것이다. 백성들은 사막을 여행하였다. 알다시피 사막은 일교차가 엄청 크다. 한낮에는 뜨거운 햇빛으로 인해 무지 더웠을 것이며 밤이 되면 엄청 추웠을 것이다. 구름이 얼마나 컸는지는 알 수 없으나 백성들에게 어느 정도의 그늘을 줄 수 있을 크기였을 것이며 밤이 되어 기온이 낮아지면 불기둥이 백성들에게 빛과 따뜻함을 제공하였을 것이다. 백성들은 혼자 있지 아니하였다. 하나님께서 이들을 인도하시며 보호하셨던 것이다. 여기서 중요한 사실은 하나님께서 인도하시니 백성들은 하나님을 전적으로 의지하는 수밖에 없다는 것이다.

다음, 우리는 늘 준비되어 있어야 한다는 것을 배울 수 있다. 구름이 성막 위에 멈추면 백성들은 진을 치고 그 자리에 머물렀는데 문제는 얼마 동안 머물러 있어야하는지를 몰랐다는 것이다. 그것이 이틀이 될 지, 한 달이 될 지, 일 년이 될 지 알 수가 없었는데 단지 구름이 움직이기 시작할 때까지를 기다려야 한다는 것이다. 그리고 구름이 움직이기 시작하면 지체하지 않고 바로 짐을 싸서 출발해야 했을 것이다. 그렇게 하려면 언제나 출발할 수 있는 준비가 되어 있어야 했다. 사막은 이들의 최종 정착지(혹은 집)가 아니기 때문이다. 마찬가지로 우리도 늘 예수님의 재림에 대한 준비가 되어 있어야 한다. 왜냐하면 예수님의 재림이 언제인지를 알 수 없기 때문이다. 마태복음 24:36은 "그 날과 그 때는 아무도 모르나니"라고 말해주고 있다. 그러므로 우리는 지금, 이 순간 준비되어 있어야 한다. 다행스러운 것은 우리 하나님께서 구름과 불기둥처럼 우리를 인도하시고 보호해주신다는 것이다.

Numbers 9:15,22

“Now on the day that the tabernacle was raised up, the cloud covered the tabernacle, the tent of the Tesitmony; from evening until morning it was above the tabernacle like the appearance of fire… Whether it was two days, a month, or a year that the cloud remained above the tabernacle, the children of Israel would remain encamped and not journey; but when it was taken up, they would journey.” Numbers 9:15, 22.

This is truly an amazing story. As the Israelites were journeying through the desert to get to the promised land, they were guided by a cloud during the day. During the night time when the sun went down, it was present in the form of fire. The key was that when the cloud rested above the sanctuary, the people camped on that location, and when the cloud was removed it was time for the people to move on.

I am sure there are many spiritual lessons that we can gain from here, but let me point out two. First, the Lord guided them in their journey. This was a desert the people were traveling throughout. It was hot during the day and cold during the night. I don’t know how big the cloud was but I believe it would have provided enough shade for the people. At night, when the temperature went down, it would have provided heat in the cold night for the people. The people of God were not left alone. They were guided and also was provided with shelter in their journey. The people had to depend on the Lord’s guidance to journey.

Secondly, it teaches that the people had to be prepared to depart anytime. The people didn’t know how long the cloud would cover the sanctuary. It could stay for a day, a month, or a year. But at any given time, when the cloud was taken up, they had to leave right away. It teaches us that we need to be prepared for Jesus’ second coming. Matthew 24:36 tells us that “No one knows the day or hour.” Therefore we must be ready for His coming, even today. The good news is that our Father is faithful in leading us and guiding us.

깨끗해짐

"그러면 어떻하냐 우리는 나으냐 결코 아니라 유대인이나 헬라인이나 다 죄 아래에 있다고 우리가 이미 선언하였느니라" 로마서 3:9
"그가 죽으심은 죄에 대하여 단번에 죽으심이요 그가 살아 계심은 하나님께 대하여 살아 계심이니" 로마서 6:10
"이와 같이 그리스도도 많은 사람의 죄를 담당하시려고 단번에 드리신 바 되셨고 구원에 이르게 하기 위하여 죄와 상관 없이 자기를 바라는 자들에게 두 번째 나타나시리라" 히브리서 9:28
"그가 거룩하게 된 자들을 한 번의 제사로 영원히 온전하게 하셨느니라" 히브리서 10:14
"그가 빛 가운데 계신 것 같이 우리도 빛 가운데 행하면 우리가 서로 사귐이 있고 그 아들 예수의 피가 우리를 모든 죄에서 깨끗하게 하실 것이요" 요한1서 1:7

나는 내 스마트폰을 참 아끼긴 하지만 그렇다고 안 떨어뜨려본 것은 아니다. 사실 여러 번 떨어뜨렸다. 참 다행인 것은 그래도 투명한 폰 케이스를 씌였기 때문에 떨어뜨릴 때마다 전화기는 상하지 않고 잘 견뎌내었다. 다만 문제라면 그 때마다 케이스가 자국이 나고 상한다는 것이다. 마침내 케이스 모서리가 깨졌다. 그래서 인터넷으로 괜찮다고 보이는 케이스를 하나 더 주문했다.

집에 배송이 되어 기분 좋게 전화기에다 씌웠다. 흐믓하게 이리 저리 만지고 있는데 갑자기 내 눈에 거슬리는 무언가가 있었다. 바로 케이스 안으로 들어간 먼지였다. 성격상 바로 그 자리에서 케이스를 벗기고 여러 번 전화기와 케이스를 깨끗이 문지른 후 다시 케이스를 장착했다. 이제는 깨끗하겠지라는 생각에 다시 보니 이번에는 다른 위치에 다른 먼지가 있었다. 다시 과정을 반복했다. 세 번째에는 아주 짧은 머리카락이 들어가 있었다. 네 번째 시도에도 마찬가지로 무언가가 들어가 있었고 결국 나는 포기하고 말았다. 진공 상태의 깨끗함을 유지하는 것은 거의 불가능하리라.

며칠에 한 번씩 집 안을 배큠 청소기로 청소를 하고 집 안을 환기 시키는데 왜 며칠에 한 번씩 정기적으로 청소를 하는 것일까? 그것은 바로 아무리 청소를 잘 해도 결국에는 다시 먼지가 쌓이기 때문이다. 아무리 아무리 청소를 해도 몇 시간만 지나도 먼지는 또 다시 생긴다. 무한 반복의 연속이 아닌가 싶다. 아무리 없애려고 하여도 다시 생기는 먼지.

이런 사례들을 생각하다보니 문득 우리의 삶의 본질이 떠오른다. 우리가 다 죄인이라는 사실 말이다. 아무리 아무리 스스로 노력해서 죄를 안 지으려고 노력하지만 결국에는 우리의 죗된 본성이 다시 살아나 죄를 짓기 마련이다. 성경은 우리가 다 죄인이라고 말한다. 그리고 그 굴레에서 스스로 벗어가니는 불가능하다고 말한다. 그러하니 아무리 노력하고 나의 본성을 청소하려 해도 다시 삶 속의 먼지, 즉 죄가 다시 생기는 것이다. 하지만 성경은 이에 대한 해결 방법이 있다고 말하는데 이는 바로 예수 그리스도를 통해서이다. 예수님의 피로 말미암아 우리는 온전히 정결해질 수 있으며 구원을 받을 수 있다고 성경은 말하고 있다. 

오늘 이 사실을 기억하고 감사하는 하루를 보내도록 하자.

The blood of Christ

“For we have previously charged both Jews and Greeks that they are all under sin.” Romans 3:9

“For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life He lives, He lives to God.” Romans 6:10

“so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.” Hebrews 9:28

“For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.” Hebrews 10:14

“But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.” 1 John 1:7

So I dropped my phone a few times recently. Thanks to my plastic phone case my phone is pretty secure without any marks or dents. But every time I dropped the phone, it was the case that would take the blow, leaving marks and dents. Finally, it was cracked.

I managed to purchase a new case for my phone online with a reasonable price and it arrived yesterday. As soon as I received it, I took off the old case and replaced it with the new one. After applying the new case, something caught my eye. There was a small speck of dust and it was really annoying. I had to get rid of it. I took off the case, wiped the phone and the case, and then applied the case. I thought I was happy now when I noticed another speck of dust! Oh, once again, repeated the process. The third time I looked, there was a very short hair (probably from me) that was in the case! Finally, I gave up.

Every couple days we vacuum the floor and clean the house. Couple hours after vacuuming you notice that there is more dust to clean! You realize that no matter how much you clean up the house there is always endless amounts of dust showing up. Thus, we have to clean the house regularly.

These experiences remind me of something. That we are all sinners and we cannot get rid of them. No matter how much we try to cleanup after ourselves on our own, we fall into sin once again. But the Bible tells us that there is a way. That is through Jesus Christ. The blood of Christ will cleanse us from our sins and bring us to salvation when we accept Him.
