민수기 9:15,22

"성막을 세운 날에 구름이 성막 곧 증거의 성막을 덮었고 저녁이 되면 성막 위에 불 모양 같은 것이 나타나서 아침까지 이르렀으되... 이틀이든지 한 달이든지 일 년이든지 구름이 성막 위에 머물러 있을 동안에는 이스라엘 자손이 진영에 머물고 행진하지 아니하다가 떠오르면 행진하였으니" 민수기 9:15,22

참으로 기이한 일이다. 이스라엘 백성들이 약속의 땅을 향해 사막을 통해 여행하고 있었다. 여행을 하고 있는 동안에는 구름이 이들을 인도하였고 해가 진 후 밤에는 불의 모양이 이들을 인도하고 보호하였다. 이 구름이 진행하다가 성막 위에 멈추면 백성들은 여정을 풀고 진을 쳤다. 하지만 구름이 성막에서 걷히면 이들은 다시 여행을 진행하였다.

여기서 우리는 여러 가지 영적 교훈을 얻을 수 있지만 이번에는 두 가지만 생각해보고자 한다. 우선, 하나님께서 백성들을 인도하신다는 것이다. 백성들은 사막을 여행하였다. 알다시피 사막은 일교차가 엄청 크다. 한낮에는 뜨거운 햇빛으로 인해 무지 더웠을 것이며 밤이 되면 엄청 추웠을 것이다. 구름이 얼마나 컸는지는 알 수 없으나 백성들에게 어느 정도의 그늘을 줄 수 있을 크기였을 것이며 밤이 되어 기온이 낮아지면 불기둥이 백성들에게 빛과 따뜻함을 제공하였을 것이다. 백성들은 혼자 있지 아니하였다. 하나님께서 이들을 인도하시며 보호하셨던 것이다. 여기서 중요한 사실은 하나님께서 인도하시니 백성들은 하나님을 전적으로 의지하는 수밖에 없다는 것이다.

다음, 우리는 늘 준비되어 있어야 한다는 것을 배울 수 있다. 구름이 성막 위에 멈추면 백성들은 진을 치고 그 자리에 머물렀는데 문제는 얼마 동안 머물러 있어야하는지를 몰랐다는 것이다. 그것이 이틀이 될 지, 한 달이 될 지, 일 년이 될 지 알 수가 없었는데 단지 구름이 움직이기 시작할 때까지를 기다려야 한다는 것이다. 그리고 구름이 움직이기 시작하면 지체하지 않고 바로 짐을 싸서 출발해야 했을 것이다. 그렇게 하려면 언제나 출발할 수 있는 준비가 되어 있어야 했다. 사막은 이들의 최종 정착지(혹은 집)가 아니기 때문이다. 마찬가지로 우리도 늘 예수님의 재림에 대한 준비가 되어 있어야 한다. 왜냐하면 예수님의 재림이 언제인지를 알 수 없기 때문이다. 마태복음 24:36은 "그 날과 그 때는 아무도 모르나니"라고 말해주고 있다. 그러므로 우리는 지금, 이 순간 준비되어 있어야 한다. 다행스러운 것은 우리 하나님께서 구름과 불기둥처럼 우리를 인도하시고 보호해주신다는 것이다.

Numbers 9:15,22

“Now on the day that the tabernacle was raised up, the cloud covered the tabernacle, the tent of the Tesitmony; from evening until morning it was above the tabernacle like the appearance of fire… Whether it was two days, a month, or a year that the cloud remained above the tabernacle, the children of Israel would remain encamped and not journey; but when it was taken up, they would journey.” Numbers 9:15, 22.

This is truly an amazing story. As the Israelites were journeying through the desert to get to the promised land, they were guided by a cloud during the day. During the night time when the sun went down, it was present in the form of fire. The key was that when the cloud rested above the sanctuary, the people camped on that location, and when the cloud was removed it was time for the people to move on.

I am sure there are many spiritual lessons that we can gain from here, but let me point out two. First, the Lord guided them in their journey. This was a desert the people were traveling throughout. It was hot during the day and cold during the night. I don’t know how big the cloud was but I believe it would have provided enough shade for the people. At night, when the temperature went down, it would have provided heat in the cold night for the people. The people of God were not left alone. They were guided and also was provided with shelter in their journey. The people had to depend on the Lord’s guidance to journey.

Secondly, it teaches that the people had to be prepared to depart anytime. The people didn’t know how long the cloud would cover the sanctuary. It could stay for a day, a month, or a year. But at any given time, when the cloud was taken up, they had to leave right away. It teaches us that we need to be prepared for Jesus’ second coming. Matthew 24:36 tells us that “No one knows the day or hour.” Therefore we must be ready for His coming, even today. The good news is that our Father is faithful in leading us and guiding us.

깨끗해짐

나는 내 스마트폰을 참 아끼긴 하지만 그렇다고 안 떨어뜨려본 것은 아니다. 사실 여러 번 떨어뜨렸다. 참 다행인 것은 그래도 투명한 폰 케이스를 씌였기 때문에 떨어뜨릴 때마다 전화기는 상하지 않고 잘 견뎌내었다. 다만 문제라면 그 때마다 케이스가 자국이 나고 상한다는 것이다. 마침내 케이스 모서리가 깨졌다. 그래서 인터넷으로 괜찮다고 보이는 케이스를 하나 더 주문했다.

집에 배송이 되어 기분 좋게 전화기에다 씌웠다. 흐믓하게 이리 저리 만지고 있는데 갑자기 내 눈에 거슬리는 무언가가 있었다. 바로 케이스 안으로 들어간 먼지였다. 성격상 바로 그 자리에서 케이스를 벗기고 여러 번 전화기와 케이스를 깨끗이 문지른 후 다시 케이스를 장착했다. 이제는 깨끗하겠지라는 생각에 다시 보니 이번에는 다른 위치에 다른 먼지가 있었다. 다시 과정을 반복했다. 세 번째에는 아주 짧은 머리카락이 들어가 있었다. 네 번째 시도에도 마찬가지로 무언가가 들어가 있었고 결국 나는 포기하고 말았다. 진공 상태의 깨끗함을 유지하는 것은 거의 불가능하리라.

며칠에 한 번씩 집 안을 배큠 청소기로 청소를 하고 집 안을 환기 시키는데 왜 며칠에 한 번씩 정기적으로 청소를 하는 것일까? 그것은 바로 아무리 청소를 잘 해도 결국에는 다시 먼지가 쌓이기 때문이다. 아무리 아무리 청소를 해도 몇 시간만 지나도 먼지는 또 다시 생긴다. 무한 반복의 연속이 아닌가 싶다. 아무리 없애려고 하여도 다시 생기는 먼지.

이런 사례들을 생각하다보니 문득 우리의 삶의 본질이 떠오른다. 우리가 다 죄인이라는 사실 말이다. 아무리 아무리 스스로 노력해서 죄를 안 지으려고 노력하지만 결국에는 우리의 죗된 본성이 다시 살아나 죄를 짓기 마련이다. 성경은 우리가 다 죄인이라고 말한다. 그리고 그 굴레에서 스스로 벗어가니는 불가능하다고 말한다. 그러하니 아무리 노력하고 나의 본성을 청소하려 해도 다시 삶 속의 먼지, 즉 죄가 다시 생기는 것이다. 하지만 성경은 이에 대한 해결 방법이 있다고 말하는데 이는 바로 예수 그리스도를 통해서이다. 예수님의 피로 말미암아 우리는 온전히 정결해질 수 있으며 구원을 받을 수 있다고 성경은 말하고 있다. 

오늘 이 사실을 기억하고 감사하는 하루를 보내도록 하자.

The blood of Christ

“For we have previously charged both Jews and Greeks that they are all under sin.” Romans 3:9

“For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life He lives, He lives to God.” Romans 6:10

“so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.” Hebrews 9:28

“For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.” Hebrews 10:14

“But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.” 1 John 1:7

So I dropped my phone a few times recently. Thanks to my plastic phone case my phone is pretty secure without any marks or dents. But every time I dropped the phone, it was the case that would take the blow, leaving marks and dents. Finally, it was cracked.

I managed to purchase a new case for my phone online with a reasonable price and it arrived yesterday. As soon as I received it, I took off the old case and replaced it with the new one. After applying the new case, something caught my eye. There was a small speck of dust and it was really annoying. I had to get rid of it. I took off the case, wiped the phone and the case, and then applied the case. I thought I was happy now when I noticed another speck of dust! Oh, once again, repeated the process. The third time I looked, there was a very short hair (probably from me) that was in the case! Finally, I gave up.

Every couple days we vacuum the floor and clean the house. Couple hours after vacuuming you notice that there is more dust to clean! You realize that no matter how much you clean up the house there is always endless amounts of dust showing up. Thus, we have to clean the house regularly.

These experiences remind me of something. That we are all sinners and we cannot get rid of them. No matter how much we try to cleanup after ourselves on our own, we fall into sin once again. But the Bible tells us that there is a way. That is through Jesus Christ. The blood of Christ will cleanse us from our sins and bring us to salvation when we accept Him. 

디모데후서 3:16

날씨가 추워지고 있다. 가을이 오고 곧 있으면 긴 겨울이 올 것이다. 이런 추운 날씨에 대비해 아침마다 비니를 쓰기 시작했다. 며칠 동안 쓰고 다니다가 어느 날 아침 집에 돌아와서 쓰고 있던 비니를 벗고 소파 위에 던져놨다. 평소 넣어두는 옷걸이 장 안에다 넣으면 될 것을 그것이 귀찮아 그냥 소파 위에 던져 놓았다. 어차피 나갈 때 또 쓸 건데 하는 생각으로 말이다. 

거실을 지날 때마다 소파 위에 놓인 비니를 보니 뭐 별 걱정도 안 된다. 그런데 다음 날 새벽 사무실에 나가려고 내려왔는데 내 비니가 보이지 않는다!!! 눈 씻고 찾아봐도 안 보인다! 할 수 없이 그냥 사무실로 나왔고 후에 집에서 다시 찾기 시작했다. 여기 저기 다 찾아봤는데, 분명 어제까지만해도 여기 있었는데 안 보인다. 내가 정말 좋아하는 비니인데. 이 비니는 10년 전 일본의 오키나와로 다이빙 투어 혼자 갔다가 길거리에서 샀던 비니였고 그 이후로 제일 편하게 잘 쓰는 비니였다. 그런데... 이렇게 허무하게 사라지다니...

다음 날 아침 피곤해서 마루바닥에 누워있었다. 그런데 갑자기 내 비니가 눈에 들어왔다. 소파 밑에 끼워져 있었고 애들 장난감에 살짝 가려져 있었다! 분명 어제 여기도 찾아보았는데 왜 안 보였을까. 하지만 이번에는 보였다. 찾는 각도가 달라서였을까. 누워서 새로운 시각으로 봐서 보였던 것일까. 보자마자 주워서 원래 있어야할 곳에 비니를 가져다 놓았다. 이런 비슷한 경험 많이 해봤을 것이다.

성경 읽는 것도 마찬가지다. 사람들은 많은 이유로 성경 읽는 것을 잘 안 한다. 귀찮고, 재미 없고, 무슨 소리를 하는지 도무지 알 길도 없다. 허나 분명한 것은 하나님께서 성경을 주셨을 때 우리가 이해할 수 있도록 주신 것이다. 다만 우리가 새로운 각도로, 새로운 시각으로 바라보면 읽히지 않던 것이 갑자기 한 줄기 빛처럼 이해될 수 있을 것이다. 분명 성경에는 복과 진리가 담겨 있는데 우리가 시각만 사알짝 바꿔주면 되지 않을까 싶다. 

Reading the Bible

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” 2 Timothy 3:16.

It’s getting cold these days. Fall is here and soon winter will be here. So I started wearing my beanie in the mornings. It’s better than wearing a cap since it keeps my head warmer. One time, I came back home and took off my beanie. I threw it on the couch instead of hanging it in the closet, thinking that I will wear it again real soon. So every time I am in the living room, I notice it’s there, too lazy to put it back in place.

Next early morning, as I am getting ready to go to church to pray, I looked for my beanie and I couldn’t find it. I looked all over but I could not locate it. Actually I couldn’t find it for the next couple days. I really like this beanie. I bought this about 10 years ago when I went to Okinawa, Japan to go SCUBA diving. I hated to think that I lost it after all these years.

On the third day, I am lying on the floor of the living room playing with my little one and then suddenly my beanie comes into my sight! It was hidden under the couch behind the toys! I mean, I looked under before but for some reason I couldn’t find it then! And for some reason, at a new angle as I was lying on the floor I was able to spot my favorite beanie. Don’t you all have a similar experience?

Reading the Bible is like that. There is always something you will blessed with when you read. You may say, it’s so boring, or it’s hard to understand. Maybe you need a different angle. The blessing is there but you simply can’t spot it from where you are. The Bible was written for us so that we can understand. Even when you read the same passage over and over again, it comes to you in a different way of blessings. So keep searching and reading. There will be joy.

야곱의 사다리

"꿈에 본즉 사닥다리가 땅 위에 서 있는데 그 꼭대기가 하늘에 닿았고 또 본즉 하나님의 사자들이 그 위에서 오르락내리락 하고" 창세기 28:12

운동하러 체육관에 가면 여러 운동 기구들이 있는데 그 중 하나가 '야곱의 사다리(Jacobs Ladder)'라는 운동기구가 있다. 이 기구는 유산소 운동 기구인데, 엄청난 운동이 된다. 런닝 머신도 제자리에서 뛰는 유산소 운동이지만 내 개인적인 주관으로는 이 기구가 운동량이 더 많을 것이라고 생각한다.

기본적으로 이 운동기구는 사다리 모양인데 약 40도의 기울기로 기울어져 있다. 기구와 연결되어 있는 스트랩이 있는데 이를 허리에 두른 다음 양 팔과 두 다리를 이용해서 기구에 올라서 사다리를 올라가면 된다. 몸을 움직이기 시작하면 사다리는 제자리에서 아래로 움직이게 되는데 이를 계속해서 사다리를 타는 것이다. 말 그대로 정말 단순한 운동기구이지만 참 힘들다. 3분만 운동해도 땀이 비 내리듯 쏟아지며 심박수도 엄청 올라가는데 운동 효과는 참 좋다. 그런데 이 기구에는 목표점이나 도착점이 없다. 그저 무한으로 반복해서 내가 버틸 수 있는데까지 그냥 움직이는 것이다.

창세기에 나오는 진짜 야곱의 사다리는 다르다. 야곱이 쌍둥이 형 에서를 피해서 도망을 간다. 빨리 가야 한다. 자칫하면 형한테 잡혀서 목숨을 잃을 수도 있으니깐 말이다. 그래서 전력을 다해서 도망가지만 곧 지치고 피곤하고 배가 고프다. 밤이 되어 잘 시간이 되었다. 잘 곳은 없으니 야외 어느 조용한 곳 땅바닥에 눕고 돌을 베게 삼아서 바로 잠들어 버렸다.

너무 피곤하면 꿈도 못 꾸기 마련인데 꿈을 꿨다. 사다리가 나타났는데 이 땅과 하늘 나라를 연결하는 기다란 사다리였고 이 사다리에는 천사들이 오르락 내리락 하였다. 이 사다리는 예수님을 상징한다. 이 사다리와 운동기구와는 큰 차이점이 하나 있는데 운동기구는 내가 부지런히 일하고 움직여야 올라갈 수 있는데 문제는 목적지가 없다는 것이다. 그러나 야곱이 꿈 속에서 본 사다리에서는 예수님께서 내려오신다. 내가 절박하고 힘들고 필요할 때 내가 노력해서 예수님을 만나는 것이 아니라 그분께서 나에게 내려오신다는 것이다. 

야곱은 아침에 일어나 하나님을 찬양하였다. 그리고 그 곳을 벧엘, 즉 '하나님의 집'이라고 불렀다.

Jacobs Ladder

“Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.” Genesis 28:12.

At the gym there is this cardio exercise equipment called Jacobs Ladder. It’s an intense workout machine and a lot harder than the treadmill (in my subjective opinion, of course). It’s basically a ladder that is tilted in 40 degrees. The workout is simple. You put a strap around your waist that is connected by a wire to the body of the machine. Then you simply just start climbing the ladder. As you start climbing the ladder will move down in place (like a treadmill).

Like I said, it’s a really simple machine and it sounds really easy, but it’s an intense workout. If you climb the machine for three minutes you will sweat like rain falling and your heart will be beating super fast. It so hard and I can’t do it for more than 10 minutes currently but I plan to improve more and more. There is really no end and destination in this workout. You just keep working and working.

That wasn’t really the case for the actual Jacob’s Ladder that we find in the book of Genesis. Jacob was running away from his brother. He was desperate and he was tired. At night he went to sleep outdoors with a stone beneath his head. Jacob had a dream, a dream where a ladder was shown. It was connected the earth to heaven and angels were marching up and down. The ladder represents Jesus. Unlike the workout machine, you are not the one working hard to climb up. Jesus comes down to us. When we are seeking help, and when we are in desperate need of our Savior, Jesus will come down to us.
