“So He said to them, ‘This kind can come out by nothing but
prayer and fasting.’” Mark 9:29
On
the last day of the Pastor-Teacher Conference one of the pastors shared the
above verse for devotional time. I remember giving a sermon on this verse few
months ago but I was blessed by this verse that I would like to share with you
once again.
It’s
a story that we are familiar with. Jesus came down from the mount of transfiguration
and there was a crowd gathered. As Jesus was wondering about what was
happening, a man came out saying, “Teacher, I brought You my son, who has a
mute spirit… So I spoke to Your disciples, that they should cast it out, but
they could not.” (v. 17, 18)
In
verse 23 Jesus says, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who
believes.” This is what the boy’s father says with tears in the following
verse: “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief.” Did you notice what he said at the
end? ‘Help my unbelief.’ When the father brought his son to the disciples he
wanted his son to be healed, yet even to that point he did not believe. We make
that mistake too often today. We say we believe in prayer and pray to Jesus,
yet we still remain in unbelief.” Now we should have the faith to believe.
Jesus
healed the boy. And in verse 29 Jesus says, “This kind came come out by nothing
but prayer and fasting.” We need to pray. We need to pray and believe. Many of
you know that the 10 Days of Prayer around the world started on Wednesday. I
pray that you will be a part of this as well.
